2) Take in the action at a local sporting event:
If baseball's your game, New York is definitely the place to be in April.  Hop on the 7 train outside of the LaGuardia campus and travel a few quick stops to Willets Point/Shea Stadium to "meet" the hometown Mets as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers on April 11-13 (game and ticket info).  The Yankees will be spending the conference weekend on the road in Boston for a series against the Red Sox, but you can still enjoy the gameand maybe a refreshing beverageat one of the city's many sports bars.  On the hardwood, New York 's Knickerbockers are limping toward the end of a forgettable season, but a trip to "The World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden , is always exciting.  Catch the Knicks in their second-to-last home game of the season versus the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, April 11 (ticket info).  The NHL season wraps up on April 6, but hockey fans may wish to check out the first-round playoff schedule for any Rangers dates (TBA) happening over the conference weekend.

3) Roll the dice at the TKTS Discount Booth:

Weekend visitors to NYC with an ear for musical theater and a predilection for spontaneity will want to visit the Theatre Development Fund's TKTS Discount Booth in Times Square (@ the Marriott Marquis Hotel, W. 46th between Broadway & 8th Avenue; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, N, R, W, A, C to Times Square), where you can purchase same-day tickets for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows at 50%, 35%, and 25% off full-price (cash only).  Click here to see what shows were offered at discount in the last week.

4) Explore Central Park
... without a tour guide:
Any New Yorker will tell you that the best way to experience Central Park is simply to let your curiosity be your guide: lace up your walking shoes, head for that big green rectangle in the middle of the map, and see where you end up.  Those with tight schedules who want to hit the essentials should probably be sure to visit the
zoo (in the southeast corner, below the E. 65th Street entrance), the Alice in Wonderland sculpture ( E. 74th Street , near Conservatory Water), Turtle Pond (near the 79th Street entrances), the carousel (near the 65th & 66th Street entrances), and Strawberry Fields (between W. 71st & 72nd Streets).  For a full map in PDF format, click here.
